Home Cooking
The 1950s was a decade through which most of America's ladies were not employed outdoors the house. These foods and drinks had been all a part of what we ate and drank throughout the 1950s, but definitely were not an day-after-day thing. From the number of cute retro diners and cafes in existence at present, one who did not experience the 1950s in particular person would easily have the false impression that we continually ate hamburgers and scorching canines and drank flavored colas, malts and milkshakes. Eating out was often reserved for particular occasions for a lot of households. Most families only had one automotive, fast food wasn't around in any numbers and married girls had been known as housewives and/or homemakers.
I purchased two outdated copies of higher Homes and Gardens Magazine from 1958 at an antique retailer not too long ago, and after enjoying the quite a few advertisements for meals products, it prompted me to take out my mother's previous cookbook and read what recipes she had collected and cooked as our household favorites. Understand that America is rich in lots of cultures and cuisines, so what families ate differed by ethnic group and region and naturally by their budgets..
Main dishes many nights at our house had been casseroles which illustrated the cook's ingenuity and thrift. Deviled eggs had been well-liked for a summer time principal dish. Meatloaf was made with hamburger stretched with bread crumbs. Note the picture for an article that touts easy methods to feed a household of 4 on one pound of hamburger. Soups corresponding to vegetable, break up pea and bean have been sluggish cooked for hours. It's attention-grabbing to us Baby Boomers that mac and cheese with the addition of crab or lobster with a variety of costly cheeses has been elevated to virtually gourmet status in at the moment's restaurants. Typical fundamental dishes might have been a hamburger, tuna fish, or hen casserole, or dried chipped beef in cream gravy over toast, fried rooster, mac and cheese, Spam, canned ham, spareribs, hot canine wrapped in Bisquick, hot canines with barbecue sauce, liver and onions or numerous bean dishes. For our household round steak, pot roast, pork chops, or real ham was served on Saturday evening, or generally on Sunday, or when we had company.
The dimensions of dinner plates was a lot smaller than plates are at the moment, which lent itself to smaller portions. Using left over foods creatively was each a ability and an artwork. My Mom reused waxed paper and tin foil many occasions! Another factor to note about consuming in the 1950s is that most parents in the 1950s had lived through the great Depression of the thirties and nothing was wasted.
1950s Spanish Rice Main Dish
Breakfast in the 1950s
Hot breakfast has not changed much since the 1950s. Bacon, eggs, hash, pancakes, toast, waffles, and fried potatoes have been the conventional at our house. Other objects included oatmeal, corn meal mush, Shredded Wheat, puffed rice, puffed wheat, Corn Flakes, and Grape Nuts. The house I grew up in had numerous citrus bushes within the back yard in Arizona, so from Dec by means of April we enjoyed fresh orange and grapefruit juice. Keep in mind that fried meals was either fried in butter, shortening, or earlier bacon drippings. Toast was slathered with butter and jelly. Otherwise, most juice was canned or from frozen focus. Most housewives had a number of wonderful espresso cake, or cinnamon roll recipes that have been referred to as fast breads in the event that they have been baking powder based mostly versus yeast primarily based which took for much longer to organize.
Salads
Salads & Vegetables 1950s Style
Salads are the meal component which have modified essentially the most since the 1950s. Think mayonaise! Sunshine Jello was lemon Jello with shredded carrots and crushed pineapple. Understand that air freight delivery of perishible fruits and vegetables was not the same as as we speak. Jello salads typically had a generous glob of mayo as a topper. Lime Jello often had shredded cabbage, and chopped celery. Jello salads came in every variety. Canned fruit resembling Fruit Cocktail or canned peaches or pear halves have been served as a salad or a dessert. Fruited Jellos with Fruit Cocktail or bannanas have been standard. Salads featuring cottage cheese with a slice of fruit or a tomato wedge were popular.
Those that grew up on farms probably loved a better variety of recent vegetables, but canned corn, canned inexperienced beans or peas have been all just about overcooked and dull. Potato dishes had been mashed, scalloped or fried.
Pie and Ice Cream
Dessert
Most nights we got dessert after dinner if and only if we ate all our dinner. Puddings corresponding to Tapioca, butterscotch, vanilla, rice, bread, and chocolate have been common. Cookies reminiscent of sugar, chocolate chip, ginger, molasses, or oatmeal with raisins had been a standard. Cakes had been spice, chocolate, angel meals, sponge and pineapple the other way up cake. Ice cream or sherbet have been a giant deal with since most refrigerators did not have very giant compartments. Most individuals made and liked pies of all sorts.
This Baby Boomer usually misses a few of these outdated favorites.

Even with all these "consolation" foods, plates and parts were smaller and searching again, I remember fewer people being obese.

What a terrific reminder of the food and recipes from the previous. Meatloaf, baked complete hen, hot canine and casseroles were supplemented with fresh green beans and summer squash. We had all the dishes you talked about with Sunday dinner being served after church and leftovers that evening after night service. We cooked from scratch excepting Bisquick which was the staple of many recipes. And you are right about dessert if and provided that we cleaned our plates.

A buddy of mine has an impressive collection of very outdated cookbooks and then she branched out into the assorted customs of table manners and eating and how the varied sorts of consuming utensils developed. I keep pondering that my youngsters won't have much to gather with all the paper plates and plastic utensils.

My mother and grandmother cooked from scratch, or homemade, the complete time I was rising up. Smile. I've actually tons of of outdated cookbooks, which I like! This led to an addiction to previous cookbooks, you recognize, the 'go to barn and choose younger chicken' cookbooks.

Thanks for sharing your recollections Paul. It amazes me how little most of our mothers needed to spend for groceries and the way far they might stretch their budgets and still produce such good food.

@mactavers , I grew up through the 50s and remember consuming numerous the food you point out in this text. On Friday I remember often consuming the smelt fish. We had fruit cocktail and jello salads and I am unable to neglect the angel meals cake. For dinners I remember mother making spare ribs and sauerkraut and calves liver with bacon on Saturday. I am sharing this hub with HP followers and on Facebook.

Hi mactavers,
This hub of yours brings me again to our own cooking in the 50s. While we did not cook the identical meals with you, the idea of managing whatever was obtainable in probably the most creative method attainable sounds similar. Thanks for this hub.
Thanks for the comments. Smaller plates, common meal occasions, no quick meals, and few items that can be thought-about junk meals right this moment. We have been lots thinner. Although there was a potato chip manufacturing unit not far from our house, and generally my Mom would buy them in a giant tin can, however not fairly often.
My mother and father each labored, however my mother did all the cooking. Sunday was the day that Mom at all times made a roast hen or beef or pork roast. No brownie mixes, cake mixes or eating out at fast meals eating places! We had a variety of low value meals like Spanish rice, scorching canines and beans, kielbasa, homemade soups. We ate much less within the 1950s, and we were all lots thinner! When we had meat, the servings had been a lot smaller than what we would expect at present. We seldom had ice cream until we had been treated to an ice cream cone once we have been out as a result of our tiny freezer would not keep it frozen. Jello, pudding, canned fruit and homemade cookies have been our normal desserts.

This can be a creative manner to have a look at history. It looks like breakfast hasn't modified in terms of what we eat but preparation seems to have advanced with know-how. I grew up within the 1990s however my dad and mom both grew up within the 1950s and ate alot of the issues you might be talking about. Voted up and fascinating!
Thanks for you remark Lawrence. I'm positive that youngsters at the moment would find both "dishes" disgusting. My Dad could not cook, but when Mom was gone, he would both scramble eggs with slices of hot canine and onions thrown in, or heat a can of pork and beans, and place a fried egg or two on prime for good measure. Your remark about eggs is true on.

In the 50's, we had spaghetti, mac and cheese, all types of vegetables and people enjoyed consuming food. It was nothing to scramble eggs and bacon then serve them on bread with bacon gravy. As quickly as you entered the entrance door, a plate was shoved in entrance of you to eat....eat.....eat. Food was the type of "Love." Enjoyed visiting kin that pressured food at you from every avenue. Meals consisted of all kinds of foods that to day seem decadent. We enjoyed our food.
I've been away the final 2 days, however due to all of you who posted feedback or who shared this Hub.

I think the best way ate depended on the a part of the nation you lived in. Having talked to individuals from California who grew up here in the 1950's, fruits and vegetables the plain approach have all the time been standard here. It was not until I had met folks from the Midwest that I even heard of consuming cheese or some sort of sauce on veggies, however that was something my mom mentioned they did loads of when she was rising up there.
Also, yes quick meals consumption was much less within the 1950's, but McDonald's and a number of the fast food joints bought there begin right here in SoCal, so it was not unknown for teens to exit on a Friday night to the native burger stands. Mexican meals has always had a heavy duty influence on California as well, and even back in the 50's people ate tacos and burritos right here, even when cooking at dwelling.
