Asian Spiced Thanksgiving Turkey - How to Cook a Turkey from the Oven

posted by Sommer Collier — 577 comments »

I refuse. At least, just about.

I'm not suggesting you cause chaos by serving lasagna on Thanksgiving.

But why not consider taking the standard Thanksgiving dishes and offer them a saucy makeover,

MY OTHER RECIPES

Thanksgiving purists are satisfied because each of their traditional dishes are represented; the adventuresome eaters are content because they be able to experience those dishes within a new way.

This year I'm likely to serve Asian Turkey, fragrant with exotic seasonings.

I prep the turkey exactly the same way I always do. Yet my rub, along with the herbs I put inside bird, will infuse a soiree of vibrant Asian flavors in the skin and meat.

This Asian turkey rub has mayonnaise, sriracha, ginger and garlic. Believe it you aren't, the mayo adds an incredible amount of flavor towards the skin and helps it be extra crispy.

Then I place some Thai basil, lemongrass, ginger, and scallions inside the cavity to perfume the bird internally.

This solution to oven roasted turkey brings additional flair for a Thanksgiving table without overshadowing additional dishes… traditional or otherwise.

You can serve your Asian-inspired oven roasted turkey with classic Thanksgiving sides, or you can hand them over all an Asian twist: boy choy braised in white wine and butter, sweet potatoes with crystallized ginger, lemongrass garlic mashed potatoes, savory soy stuffing…

Before we arrive at the Asian turkey recipe, I want to share some pointers for oven roasted turkey. Following these steps can easily make a HUGE difference from the quality within your bird.

How to Cook a Turkey from the Oven

Thaw Early.

Shop for ones turkey no less than a week before Thanksgiving. Place it within a roasting pan and give it time to thaw from the fridge a few days. This will make certain you don't end up that has a frozen bird Thanksgiving morning.

Brine.

Brining is a good way to infuse flavor in to the meat. Prepare 1 gallon of water with 1 cup salt. Feel free to add any spices and herbs you desire. Then squeeze turkey in the clean bucket and pour the brine water over it. Refrigerate every day and night. Drain and dry.

If you have out of time for it to brine-don't fret. Carefully loosen the epidermis of the turkey and rub the many meat (under your skin) with salt and herbs. Make sure to accomplish this over the entire bird. Its nearly the same as brining and definitely will still give your turkey a lot more flavor than salting skin.

Dry Well.

Whether you brine or otherwise, your turkey's skin ought to be bone dry before seasoning to be sure in gets crispy. Use clean paper towels to provide your bird a rubdown.

Stuff Not.

Stuffing a turkey is good for the birds…heh heh! Sorry I couldn't resist.

Make your stuffing inside a baking dish, rather than stuffing it from the cavity with the turkey. Then your turkey can come outside of the oven if the meat is moist and easily cooked through, rather than drying out because you wait to the stuffing to arrive at the right temperature.

Birdy Massage.

Once your turkey is thawed, brined, and dried, rub the turkey down with oil, butter or mayo concoction to flavor your skin layer and make it crispy.

Start Upside Down.

Cooking your turkey ugly allows body fat and juices to run in the breasts meat with regard to added flavor and tenderness. I usually cook my turkey breast-down for your first hour. Then flip it over, re-oil the very best and roast it the rest with the way, right-side up. The top will pop back and brown, for just a pretty Thanksgiving bird.

Use High Heat.

After numerous playing with the temperature and cooking time, I find I receive a juicier bird with crispy skin, if I roast it for a higher temperature at a lower price time-400 degrees F, usually for approximately 2 hours. This also releases the oven for other Thanksgiving dishes.

Rest.

After all of that, you as well as the bird take some rest. I like to let the turkey to stay for a half-hour before I slice it. The juices redistribute along with the slices often come out much neater.

Asian Spiced Thanksgiving Turkey

Whole Oven Roasted Turkey with Asian Herbs and Spices.

Ingredients:

2 cups mayonnaise

2 tablespoons ground ginger

2 tablespoons garlic powder

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F minimizing the rack to your lowest position.

Dry the turkey thoroughly with paper towels. Stuff the basil, lemongrass, scallions and ginger slices within the main cavity and smaller neck cavity. Close the neck cavity using a toothpick. Most turkeys include the drumstick tucked beneath a flap of skin to ensure they are secure. If your's didn't, tie the legs combined with kitchen twine

Mix the mayonnaise, sriracha, ginger powder and garlic powder in the bowl. Massage on the entire bird, leaving 2 tablespoons of mayo mix for later. Then salt and pepper liberally.

Place the turkey, breast side down, within a roasting pan with a rack Pour two servings of water inside pan and place inside oven.

Roast for 60 minutes. Using paper towels or turkey lifting forks, carefully flip the bird breast side up. Rub the remainder mayo mixture within the top. Add additional water for the pan when necessary, and roast another 45-60 minutes. You want to interior temperature from the bird to achieve 165 degree F from the thigh area. If the turkey starts getting darker and uneven on top, cover it loosely with foil. Allow the turkey to rest at the very least 20 minutes before slicing.

I am thankful for my loved ones's a healthy body. This is cliche but last October my mother was hit by way of a car while she was walking down the street. Somehow she only (if I will even say that) suffered severe problems for one leg plus a moderate back injury; both should heal over time but her walk may well not return to 100%, a lot more 90%. There was no brain damage or paralysis. Whew! So, I'm very, very thankful for a healthy body.

Great recipe! I will try it out tomorrow for that first time, but I don't possess a separate turkey roaster. I have an oven. Should I wrap aluminum oil across the turkey and roasting pan,

Hi, it's my new making turkey in 2010 and I came upon this recipe and extremely want to utilise it. I have several questions though:

1) Does it really only take couple of hours to cook the turkey,

2) There is no basting needed because of this recipe correct,

3) Do you possess a gravy recipe that pairs well using this turkey,

Thanks!

Sommer — posted November 25, 2013 at 10:15 pm Reply

Hi There!

The cooking time varies base on the weight in the turkey, but at 400 a 12-14 lb turkey should cook in about couple of hours. And yes, this can be a no-baste recipe.

As for gravy, the pan juices use a lot of great flavor. You could whisk in a few flour and simmer the juices so you would get a great gravy with asian flavors.
