Lennie Ware is sitting together with her daughter Jessie, telling me about her recent university reunion in Birmingham. Then she twigged. ‘The barmaid stated, “You’re Lennie! I love your podcast.” And she was a younger lady of about 24.’ Lennie chuckles, not fairly believing that this is occurring to her; that, on the age of 68, she is well-known sufficient to be recognised by barmaids born within the nineties. As he was ordering, the bartender stated to Lennie, ‘Do I do know you? ’ ‘And I mentioned, “I don’t think so.”’ It took a moment for the bartender to make the connection, but one thing in regards to the voice appeared acquainted. She was on the bar along with her previous mates, she tells me, and one provided to purchase her a drink.

‘You’re a millennial icon,’ Jessie says drily.

And indeed she is. In reality, their podcast Table Manners now has ten million listeners. ‘My friends had been a bit impressed,’ Lennie continues as if she hasn’t heard. ‘But they think I’m doing a blog. They don’t know what a podcast is.’ Two years ago Lennie worked nine to five as a social worker; now she suits recording the podcast round her day job, and it has earned her legions of followers.

Three years ago, a friend of Jessie’s suggested she launch a podcast. With 4 Brit nominations underneath her belt, she’s had three prime-ten albums, collaborated with Ed Sheeran and counts Adele as one of her greatest buddies. Jessie was already famous as a singer-songwriter. Her most well-known music, ‘Say You Love Me’, has had a whopping a hundred and twenty million streams on Spotify.

But after Jessie’s final album in 2017, she admits she wasn’t having fun with music any more. ‘I had a child and that i didn’t feel like I used to be doing an excellent balancing act of being a mum and working. The podcast was simply speculated to be fun - it wasn’t speculated to be a business.’

But it surely turned into a hugely profitable one. Now in its ninth season, Jessie and Lennie have interviewed - and cooked for - an array of well-known guests, together with Nicole Scherzinger (who only discovered in regards to the podcast when Prince instructed Nicole he was a fan of Jessie’s music), Sadiq Khan (who confided that he’d be operating for a second term as mayor) and George Ezra (where Jessie over-marinated brief ribs and so they had to order a takeaway). The premise is simple: Jessie, 35, and her mom invite a celebrity into their residence, cook them a meal, then chat to them over meals and wine.

The duo have additionally scooped a UK Audio Production Award and attracted a legion of loyal listeners, of which I am one.

They've now written an accompanying cookbook, filled with recipes from their own kitchen - starting from Lennie’s mother’s chopped and fried gefilte fish to the lamb with pistachio herb crust that Jessie cooked for her first anniversary date along with her now husband, Sam, a private trainer. (The couple have two children, a girl aged three and a boy of 11 months, whom Jessie chooses not to call in interviews.)

At first, Lennie was meant to do the cooking whereas Jessie did the interviewing, but Lennie’s pure curiosity took over and she started asking questions.

‘It’s not my world, actually,’ Lennie sighs.

‘You’re so nice at it, although,’ I say.

‘You’re fabulous,’ Jessie insists.

‘No, I’m not.’

‘Lennie’, I ask, ‘are you someone who finds it difficult when people say nice things about you?’

‘Yes,’ her daughter solutions for her.

Why is that? ‘I don’t know,’ Lennie replies. The 2 are never making an attempt to be anything aside from themselves and the result's an environment so convivial that the interviewee typically ends up revealing way over they ever meant. ‘Because I’m solely right here for Jessie. It’s not about me. And after pop star Cheryl opened up about new motherhood and splitting from her ex, One Direction’s Liam Payne, he additionally came on. Nigella Lawson admitted to being a fussy eater. My good friend Claire says in the event you get a praise you must simply say thanks. I always feel embarrassed.’ This sincerity is sweetly obvious on the podcast.

‘He was very candy,’ says Lennie. ‘With a bod to die for! At the end we always have a selfie and that i mentioned, “Liam, you'll be able to simply strip off now.” And he checked out me like I’d gone mad.

I went, “I’m teasing!”’

‘Mum leches over the young pop stars,’ Jessie adds. Lennie seems to be horrified. ‘I’m joking, Mum!’

When Nicole Scherzinger was a guest, they had been pleasantly stunned by how much she ate. ” I feel she really appreciated having a home-cooked meal.’ ‘She was, like, “What is that this? They cooked her a Thanksgiving meal and ‘she’d by no means had bread sauce,’ Jessie says.

‘She was lovely,’ Lennie says dreamily. And that wasn’t false as a result of it’s like… ’ She’s tiny, like this slender - and a proper bosom. ‘She had the very best bosom I’ve ever seen.

Jessie rolls her eyes. ’ If you wish to discuss Nicole’s boobs… ’Mum, really assume about what you’re saying because issues go in the paper.

‘Oh, no!’ Lennie says, mortified. ‘She was just a really handsome lady.’

The Wares are equal elements bickering and affectionate. ‘The daughters will say, “That’s similar to me and my mum,”’ Lennie explains. ‘Or the mums say, “That’s identical to me and my daughter.” I think we put the “fun” in dysfunctional.’

The dysfunctionality is particularly acute for the time being, as the two are dwelling in Lennie’s home in Clapham, South London, whereas Jessie’s residence is being renovated. They'd an argument the week before about Jessie not cleansing up after herself. It has, they admit, been somewhat trying, on condition that they now reside and work together.

‘I stay quiet while she shouts,’ Jessie says. ’ No one thinks they’re going to work with their mum, particularly when… ‘I did look into short-time period letting.

‘So,’ Lennie butts in, ‘my research, which is meant to be sacred, is full of bins of Jessie’s and a bike and buggies. I don’t even have area to go in!’

‘Mum, you’re making out that you’re Marie Kondo. You’re really not. It’s an absolute mess.’

‘My desk is,’ Lennie protests. ‘But it’s an organised mess.’

Jessie was ten when her dad and mom divorced (her father is the former Panorama reporter John Ware). Lennie was working and elevating three children - her eldest, Hannah, is an actress in LA; her youngest, Alex, is a doctor with a penchant for making cakes (he made the blackberry and custard tart when Nigella came spherical).

Lennie says she coped with the change in household circumstance the identical as she always had: cooking vats of spaghetti bolognese. ’ ‘I wasn’t strict,’ she says. I’m not saying I’m their pal - I used to be their mum… ‘Because John had gone, we were extra of a team.

‘I wouldn’t say we obtained away with murder,’ says Jessie, ‘because I don’t assume we have been naughty kids. But I’m stricter than you.’

‘You’re much stricter than me,’ Lennie says. As a grandmother, she admits she’s a mushy contact.

‘My son solely blows kisses to her,’ Jessie says. ‘I attempt to get one, but he just blows them to Mum.’

‘If Jessie’s daughter says, “Oh, Grandma, I’d like that…”’

‘She’s on Amazon, buying it,’ Jessie says.

Lennie beams. ‘My granddaughter did say, “I’d wish to trip on an elephant, could you type that out?” I needed to say: “I don’t assume I can this week…”’

Did any of Lennie’s youngsters undergo odd meals phases? Keeping them on observe is like wrestling tadpoles. ‘Hannah,’ Jessie says. ‘She was obsessive about pigs.’ There isn’t time to ask what this implies - they’re already on to another subject.

The Wares typically ask their podcast company what their earliest food recollections are, but when i pose the identical query they struggle to answer. ‘I simply cherished food,’ Jessie says. There are too many - fish and chips eaten on a automobile journey to Wales; Jessie’s toes wiggling with anticipation as soon as a plate of food approached her excessive chair, and so forth. ‘Nothing’s modified. I’m obsessed by it. I think about it the entire time.’

They discover their dream final meal easier to visualise. They're extra similar than they could think, but I actually hope they never stop their good-humoured bickering. Lennie’s would be a sourdough black bread from the Jewish bakeries in Manchester, where she grew up, with ‘really sharp cheddar cheese and tomatoes and lots of black pepper’. Jessie’s can be hen soup and matzo balls, then traditional Christmas dinner and her mum’s trifle or tiramisu. It strikes me that while each meals are different, they share a sure comforting wholesomeness, which seems an accurate reflection of Jessie and Lennie themselves. It’s such a lovely factor for the remainder of us to listen to.
