This blackened tilapia recipe isn't for the weak! It's spicy, with bold flavors. For those of you who think healthy eating is boring, reconsider!

I love eating and cooking a good diet. I know this food blog has more decadent recipes than dessert recipes, but I go about doing try to adhere to the 80/20 rule, that you eat healthy 80% of that time period. Usually, Trevor and I try and eat healthy Sunday - Thursday and splurge Friday and Saturday.

For breakfasts lately, were doing my no banana berry green smoothie It takes me 5 minutes to build, and I love getting back in 1 whole cup of spinach and fruit the first thing in the morning! We also have some eggs for additional protein.

Lunchtime, there exists a salad with plenty of veggies, all kinds of cheese, and hard boiled eggs. It's fresh, light, and brimming with protein to help keep you full!

Then there's dinner. Chicken is normally my go-to, as it would be healthy, it isn't difficult, and it is so versatile. Although my adoration for chicken runs deep, sometimes ya gotta change things up a bit. Next time you are feeling like you have a rut, but desire to eat something healthy that's filled with flavor, make my blackened tilapia! This blackened tilapia recipe runs on the homemade rub that you could store inside the fridge for those who have any leftovers. It makes for just a super easy and quick weeknight meal that seriously packs a punch. It's spicy, and so brimming with flavor, you may not feel like you are consuming anything healthy”!

Tilapia was the initial fish I liked, because it is not a… you know…fishy-fish. The flavor can be so mild that I think perhaps the strongest fish haters would have fun here! Ever since I discovered my adoration for tilapia, I've been enthusiastic about finding other ways to cook it! I've got into healthy tacos , topped it with greek yogurt, lemon, and parmesan, and after this, I've managed to get super spicy and blackened!

I've never aimed to blacken” any food before, though it often just happens unintentionally if not desired 😉 Have no fear, because I've made every one of the mistakes in your case already, seriously, many, many mistakes, so you'll not have to worry about it. The first time I made this was in the holidays when my mother in law was a student in town. She's an enormous fan of tilapia, too, and Trevor loves spicy, so I thought blackened tilapia would certainly be a perfect recipe to produce!

Right, Wrong.

Wrong, because I virtually smoked my mother in law from the apartment. The pan and oil got too hot, something was stuck under my burner coils, and I forgot to convert the fan on. To paint the image a little further, the smoke detectors were going off, Teddy was caught confused, the surrounding was slowly filling with smoke, everybody was coughing, plus the rub is spicy, so my eyes were burning and watering constantly, while I seeking to save my fish!

Shortly after Trevor stopped, dropped and rolled to be safe, emerging in the smoke came perfectly cooked and blackened tilapia!

If that does not deserve a fist bump, I'm not sure exactly what does.

I made this again yesterday, over lower heat these times, and properly made the tilapia again, but without smoking anyone out!

Start start by making your rub. Combine paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, cayenne, dried oregano, dried thyme, celery seed, and salt and mix together.

Take your tilapia - mine was frozen then thawed (place fish within the refrigerator for 4-6 hours OR set up a ziplock baggie and submerge under cold water for 15-20 min) - and gently dab using a paper towel to eliminate some of the moisture.

Cover generously along with your spice rub, making certain to press it in along with your finger tips.

Gently remove any extra rub and hang aside. You can allow rubbed fish rest at room temperature for about 20 minutes.

Now heat a skillet over medium heat for 5 minutes, incorporate a tablespoon of oil, choose coat the pan, and immediately add your tilapia (I usually make two each time, but I'd suggest testing only 1 out first, soon you get the hang of it). I add my tilapia immediately, because I don't want the oil to get too hot and commence smoking!

The pan is hot enough in case you hear it sizzle after you drop the tilapia. Cook on the one hand for about 2-3 minutes. Flip it over, include a another half tablespoon of oil, and cook for an additional 2 minutes, or till the fish is cooked through. The tilapia will probably be opaque and may be flaked that has a fork. Don't forget that it is blackened tilapia, increased exposure of the blackened, so don't be concerned when the outside is black! 😉

Remove the blackened tilapia on the pan, squeeze fresh lemon juice generously over it, and serve immediately! I served this with a side of broccoli, plus some orzo pasta that had been inspired by my lemon garlic chicken and orzo pasta recipe ! Everything was covered in fresh lemon juice, thus it really brought the bathroom together.

Just somewhat hint, while I know you are heading not to smoke anyone out, I'd recommend having your fan going…just in the event that! 😉 It's essentially inevitable that after you're blackening anything, handful of smoke will occur!

This blackened tilapia recipe just isn't for the weak! It's really spicy, the flavors are bold, and also the lemon juice brightens the entire thing up! For those of you who think healthy eating is boring, reconsider!
